A fine and rare Italian rococo ormolu and cut-glass eight-light large chandelier
circa 1750, Turin

Catalogue Note

This chandelier can be compared with a virtually identical example in the Palazzo Reale in Turin, illustrated, S. Pinto, Arte di Corte a Torino da Carlo Emanuele III a Carlo Felice, Turin, 1987, p. 226 (fig. 1).  The palaces of the Duke of Savoy, in and around Turin, were fitted with extremely fine chandeliers.  Many of those which incorporated rock crystal elements were especially made by a Piedmontese factory between 1749 and 1754.  At the same time, the Court was also buying chandeliers in the classic style in Bohemia, one of the traditional centers of European glass-making.
