This gouache, most probably executed between 1762 and 1770, represents the main façade of the Louvre as it looked in the 18th century. In the background one can see the Palais Mazarin, executed by Le Vau under the direction of Colbert between 1662 and 1668.
Jean-Baptiste Lallemand studied under Giovanni Niccolo Servandoni, and in 1745 he was appointed member of the Académie of St. Luc in Paris. Two years later he went to Rome where he stayed for fourteen years. Around 1786 he collaborated with the twelve volume publication of Voyage pittoresque de la France, published between 1781 and 1796.
