Provenance

Anonymous sale, Sotheby's, New York, May 19, 1994, lot 310 (as by Jean-Jacques de Boissieu and as 'signed with initials lower left and dated 1799').

Condition

Canvas relined. There is lovely retention of the paint surface and some impastos. About three-quarters of the way up the tree trunk at right there is an old repaired horizontal tear about four inches long, which is visible to the naked eye, but not disturbing. There are some other slightly discolored retouches and some larger reworkings here and there. U.V. reveals aforementioned retouches and reworkings. All restorations have been applied well, and no further restoration is recommended. The painting may be hung as is. In a carved and painted wood frame. This lot will be offered without reserve.
