Catalogue Note

C. F. Surtees served in the 10th Hussars from 1843-1853.  Mainsforth Hall (see Provenance) in the town of Mainsforth in County Durham was the home of the Surtees family.  Another version of the Surtees portrait, ascribed to Partridge, was sold at Christie's, London, August 8, 1975, lot 147.
