Catalogue Note

The central scene in the first panel depicting two elegant figures dancing Le Menuet with spectators surrounding them is a quote from Domenico Tiepolo's painting of the same title, now in the Louvre, Paris.  Domenico's painting, which was engraved by Giacomo Leonardis in the 18th century, would have been well-known to Italian artists in the 19th century.
