Catalogue Note

The embossed gilt tooled leather covers are inspired by the designs of William Morris (1834-1896), the leading exponent of the Arts and Crafts movement in late Victorian England.  He and his great friend, the pre-Raphaelite artist Edward Burne-Jones, together with the architect Sir Aston Webb and the designer William Watt, advocated a style drawn from natural themes that was simpler and more refined than the rather boldly overstated themes that had otherwise dominated the Victorian era.
