Catalogue Note

The specimen marble top was produced in Rome at the begining of the 19th century. Specimen marble tops frequently incorporated ancient rare marbles excavated from Roman ruins and they were particularly popular with the English aristrocracy who enjoyed acquiring them whilst on their Grand Tour on the Continent. On their arrival in England, bases were commissioned to show off the marble top.
