Description

  • A Greek Bronze Hydria
  • Height 17 1/4 in.
with ogee foot ornamented with  tongues, overhanging rim molded with egg-and-dart beneath beading, and fluted lifting handles each engraved with radiating tongues on the circular attachments, the fluted pouring handle with lower attachment in the form of a siren with outspread wings standing above an inverted palmette and flanked by fragmentary voluted tendrils, her long hair parted in the center and falling in twin strands over the shoulders.

Condition

good for an object of this kind, mouth slightly warped, half of upper attachment plate for pouring handle missing, on lower plate parts of volutes broken away on both sides, crack across legs of siren, body of vessel dented in two areas, including to proper right side of siren as shown, longitudinal dent with some losses above foot, entire surface appears to be coated in wax or dark oily substance, two lead splotches on inside of foot
