Description

  • A Marble Figure of Athena
  • Height 17 1/2 in. 44 cm.
the goddess enthroned with her feet resting on a low trapezoidal plinth, her raised right hand now missing and formerly holding a spear, and wearing a sleeveless chiton tied with a belt below the breasts, himation draped over her lap, and Corinthian helmet with hole on top for attachment of the missing crest, her face carved separately in a different marble, the throne with voluted legs, high back with molded cornice, and broad acanthus finial with voluted ends each centering a rosette, an owl at her feet.

Catalogue Note

The present statuette is a miniature version of the colossal statue of Minerva which stood, together with enthroned Jupiter and Juno, in the Temple of the Capitoline Triad in Rome.
