Description

  • An Apulian Red-figured Rhyton
  • Length 9 1/2 in. 24.1 cm.
in the form of the head of a deer, the inserted antlers missing, the neck decorated with a figure of Eros striding to right, looking back, and holding a patera in his left hand and a fan(?) in his right hand, a large flower before him, voluted tendrils flanking the handle, egg-and-dot below the rim, the details in added white.

acquired in Switzerland in 1976

Condition

Broken and repaired from several fragments with restoration along the breaklines. Several areas of repair along the fan. Entire surface has been shellacked which makes it difficult to assess condition under UV light
