Description

  • A Syrian Limestone Funerary Relief, Palmyra
  • Height from modern base 21 in. 53.3 cm.
carved in high relief with the bust of a young man clad in a chiton and himation, his face with prominent chin, bow-shaped lips, straight nose, long eyes, chevron-incised eyebrows in relief, and furrowed brow, his unruly wavy hair falling over the forehead in comma-shaped and voluted curls, three lines of Aramaic inscription carved on the slab to his left, "Ogga (son of) Ma'an, son of Ogga, Alas."

Condition

as shown, note broken-off left hand and chipped corners, nose slightly rubbed, nicks and scratches overall, diagonal line across face is flaw in stone, mounted so that relief is slightly sunken in base
