- A Blue and Green Faience Jar
- Height 6 in. 15.2 cm.
with pedestal foot, ovoid body, and flaring neck and mouth, the body carved in shallow relief with registers of foliate motifs, pairs of sphinxes striding to right, and rosettes with white-painted centers, a stylized vine motif encircling the neck, the vessel ornamented at mid-body with white faience globules and appliques in the form of Eyes of Horus and the god Bes brandishing his sword.
Condition
repaired from several fragments with minor restorations along the breaklines (paint has now turned color and is visible as a darker green), rim restored, small chip on foot, area of discoloration on shoulder; this jar was unsold at Christie's, New York, December 7th, 2000, no. 373 ($30-50,000)
