  • A Pale Green Faience Figure of Thoeris
  • Height 3 1/16 in. 7.8 cm.
the hippopotamus-headed goddess striding on a rectangular base with her hands flanking her round belly, a sa(?) sign below, her crocodile tail behind, and wearing a tripartite wig and diadem of uraei with hole for insertion of a crown, her gaping jaws with sharp teeth bared.

Condition

generally good, the wig has a mottled discolored appearance perhaps the result of some ancient coating and or imperfections in the manufacture of the object

Catalogue Note

"Thoeris was believed to watch over the slumbering during the night, frightening all evil spirits by her horrible appearance" (Baltimore, Egyptian Sculpture, p. 141). She was also the patroness of pregnancy. The sa sign stands for protection.

An old label under the wood base is inscribed "1864." Adjacent is the same number in pencil.
