Description

  • A Limestone Funerary Stele, Syria, Roman Imperial
  • 31 by 14 1/2 in. 78.7 by 36.8 cm.
carved in relief within a raised frame with an eagle standing atop a filleted wreath, a conical basket on a profiled base below, six lines of Greek inscription with remains of red pigment to the left of the basket, the text possibly ending with the formula KHAIRE ("hail and farewell").
