Description

  • An Apulian Red-figured Askos
  • Height 8 3/8 in. 21.3 cm.
painted in front with a seated woman facing right, looking back, and holding a fan and open box, a cross-bar torch across her legs, a large cylindrical basket or box beside her, a fringed scarf in the field, encircling wave pattern above the foot, a large palmette flanked by scrolling tendrils and subsidiary palmettes in the handle zone, egg-and-dot below the neck.

Condition

good, small areas of abrasion and pitting, most of them inpainted, especially on handle, top of rim, under one side of neck, and over tips of palmettes at back, most of reserved areas discolored/darkened
