Description

  • An Alabaster Jar
  • Height 13 3/4 in. 34.9 cm.
with handles (one restored) each in the form of a head of a Nubian ibex, the missing ears probably made of silver or gold and formerly inserted, the body of the vessel painted in faint remains of red and black with decoration including a lotus flower necklace on one side, and foliate collars beneath and around the necks of the ibexes.

acquired in London in the 1970s

Condition

one handle mostly restored, surface very worn, chipped, and abraded, probably damged also by moisture, large chips on rim as shown, one of which retains a modern restoration, area of restoration on side of horns on remaining handle
