Catalogue Note

Eliza Wedgwood was the great-granddaughter of the potter and an inseparable friend of Sargent's sister Emily.  She was one of the artist's regular companions on his travels around Europe between the turn of the century and the First World War and she later recounted her experiences to the artist's biographer Evan Charteris.  This account covers five long expeditions between 1907 and 1913 to Italy, Majorca and Corfu, and is a major source of information on this period of his career.
