Catalogue Note
The subject of this painting, the Coronet, is perhaps the last grand schooner yacht of the Gilded Age to survive to this day, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The yacht was built in 1885 by C. & R. Poillon of Brooklyn for Rufus T. Bush. By 1895 (the year this work was painted) she was owned by Arthur Curtis James, and is shown here flying the burgee of the New York Yacht Club and James' private signal, green with crescent moon and star. In 1995 the yacht was acquired by The International Yacht Restoration School in Newport, Rhode Island.
