Catalogue Note

The image is a composite of several scenes in Bemelmans' 1958 book, "Madeline and the Gypsies".  While the actual image was not used in the publication, many of the characters and features in the composition played a pivotal role in the young heroine's adventures.

Popular radio hosts, Ed and Pegeen Fitzgerald, were close friends of Bemelmans for many years.  "Bemmy", as they referred to the artist, was an occasional guest on their much-beloved radio broadcast, "the Fitzgeralds", which aired on station WOR from 1931-1975.  The artist presented them with this work in the late 1950s.
