Canvas is not lined. SURFACE: in fairly good condition; varnish is very dirty and has yellowed surface--work could use a cleaning; a small puncture with minor loss at upper left (in sky); some scattered craquelure/paint separation; canvas is loose in stretcher and buckles slightly UNDER ULTRA VIOLET: a few small repaints at upper left (aforementioned puncture) and right in sky

Catalogue Note

Known both as a painter and educator, Douglas was originally from Topeka, Kansas.  He came to New York in the 1920s and settled in Harlem where his name became almost synonymous with the Harlem Renaissance.
