Catalogue Note
According to the artist's grandniece, Nancy Brett, the scene depicted in the painting shows an area just outside Barlow's studio in Etaples, France. He often used the two local young girls shown here as models, one of whom was Madame Louise Grandidier, who is now almost 100 years old. The studio burned down after the artist's death in 1937.
