Catalogue Note
Professor Patricia Hills writes of this painting: "This character study is typical of the painting Johnson did when living in the Netherlands in the early 1850s. He admired Rembrandt and liked painting elderly men emerging from a dark background of luminous shadows....
"Cogswell", written on a label on the back refers to a relative of Johnson's, who purchased several painting from the Estate Sale" (see above).
This work will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's work by Patricia Hills.
