- Fragment de siège à caryatide, Luba-Hemba

Le personnage féminin est représenté les bras levés pliés à angle droit, portant du bout de ses doigts tendus le plateau circulaire du siège. Au buste marqué par l'ombilic saillant et les seins fermes répond la tête aux formes pleines, dont l'ample front bombé est souligné par le bandeau retenant une coiffe élaborée. Très bel équilibre des traits du visage, aux lignes tendues : hautes arcades sourcilières, yeux en amande mi-clos, bouche aux commissures relevées. Initiales "CMS" inscrites à l'encre blanche sur la nuque. Belle patine nuancée, légèrement croûteuse, brillante sur les reliefs.

Condition
The lower part (stomach, legs and base) is missing. Wear consisitent with age and use within the culture. Tiny chip to the end of the left breast. Open stable crack on the seat, at the front, running from the edge to the center. Two superficial losses to the edge of the seat, one on the front, one on the left side.

Catalogue Note
Ce siège cariatide s'apparente au style développé par les Niembo, situés dans la partie méridionale du territoire Hemba, voisin des Luba.
Les sièges figurés - représentant toujours des personnages féminins - constituent pour les Luba l'un des symboles les plus importants du pouvoir. Ils traduisent la hiérarchie, très stratifiée, de la souveraineté. Réservés au roi, ils sont considérés comme le réceptacle de son esprit. Selon Nooter-Roberts (in Tervuren, 1995 : 356), le siège figuré constitue le symbole concret du siège « métaphysique » nommé kitenga, sorte de lieu de mémoire de chaque souverain défunt.
