nkisi, montrant un personnage en buste, le dos voûté, les mains posées sur l'abdomen proéminent. A la puissance de la pose - accentuée par le traitement anguleux des volumes - et des attributs (collier en crins, grelot-pendeloque en fer), répond la tête imposante, l'expression marquée par la plénitude des traits finement modelés. La tête est surmontée d'un réceptacle à médecines. Très belle patine sombre, légèrement grumeleuse sur le corps, suintante sur le visage.

Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. A narrow crack in front of proper right ear, approximately 3cm. Loss, approximately 3.5cm x 2cm to base, on back. Some losses to plant fibre around waist.

Qu'elle se rattache à la statuaire Luba ou Hemba - auxquelles elle s'apparente stylistiquement - cette statuette fétiche se distingue à la fois par la puissance de sa sculpture et par son type - masculin. Dans les deux cas, les statuettes nkisi sont rares, comparées au large corpus des autres formes de la statuaire Luba et Hemba. Désignées sous le terme générique de nkisi, elles sont utilisées par les spécialistes rituels pour la divination, la guérison, l'initiation et le règlement des litiges.
