- 16 in
mbulu ngulu, le petit visage concave, piriforme, décoré de lamelles de laiton disposées horizontalement de part et d'autre du motif cruciforme plaqué, sur lequel sont placés les yeux fendus et le nez en trièdre. Le court cimier en croissant transverse enveloppe l'extrémité des coiffes latérales étroites, s'achevant en volutes. Le dos est sculpté de losanges imbriqués. Belle patine sombre, profonde, du bois.

Condition
Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture.
Some minor losses to metal leaf. Old losses to lower element. Proper left flange at head cracked through (visible only from the reverse) but stable - approximately 4.5cm from outer edge.

Catalogue Note
Selon la classification stylistique établie par Louis Perrois des figures de reliquaire plaquées de métal, celle-ci se rattache à la "catégorie V", caractérisée par "la dominance des coiffes latérales courtes à volute terminales" (Perrois, 1985 : 48). Selon l'auteur, les indications ethnographiques recueillies par Anderson en 1963 et 1974 autorisent à les attribuer aux groupes Kota méridionaux (Mossendjo au Congo).
Cette petite figure de reliquaire se distingue par ses formes condensées et l'élégance de ses lignes.
