Catalogue Note
A superb Baule male figure, Côte d'Ivoire
Within the large corpus of Baule statuary, the offered figure is distinguished by its superb plastic qualities and majestic interpretation of the Baule canon of beauty. Whilst accentuating the head, the sculptor has created a remarkably balanced sculpture by combining a powerful expression with delicate details and gentle modelling.
The names of individual Baule artists remain unknown. Historically Westerners have failed to recognise the artistic individuality of African sculptors because, typically, scant information was recorded at the time of collection. In addition, among the Baule, artists were not publicly associated with their sculptures. However, in this case, the hand of a master sculptor can been identified by the rimmed eyelids half closed over globular eyes, as well as the figure of eight mouth carved in relief.
Baule figures are used for individual and family occasions. They either represent spirits of the bush (asie usu), sculpted with the features of a handsome human, or a couple from the other world (blolo bla, blolo bian).
