kakame, représentant un personnage avec des attributs masculins et féminins, sculpté dans une attitude frontale : les bras libérés du corps, les épaules arrondies, les jambes écartées aux genoux fléchis. La tête ovale, couverte d'une calotte, montre un visage creusé en forme de cœur, aux traits simplifiés : yeux ronds incrustés de chaux blanche, nez rectiligne aux narines dilatées et bouche triangulaire incrustée de blanc. Elle porte sur la poitrine un ornement en forme de croissant de lune, rehaussé de blanc et prolongé par une pendeloque, évoquant les pectoraux en nacre portés dans toute la Nouvelle-Guinée. Patine d'usage, ancienne.

Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. One finger missing from proper left hand. Losses to ears and feet. An insect skin in the proper left eye. Small nick to back of head, approximately 11cm x 1mm. Two curved hairline cracks at back of proper right leg, approximately 10cm. A loss and curved crack down right arm, approximately 45cm.

Catalogue Note
Les sculptures en ronde bosse du Golfe de Papouasie sont rares et peu documentées. Cependant, le style réaliste de cette figure l'apparente à la statuaire des populations Purari de l'aire culturelle Namau, offrant une pose similaire et le même type d'ornement porté sur la poitrine. cf. en particulier la paire de statues, l'une féminine, l'autre masculine, collectée par Paul Wirz en 1930, conservée au Museum der Kulturen de Bâle (Newton, 1961 : 85, fig. 212 et 213), ou celle appartenant à la collection Faith-Dorian Wright (Welsch, 2006 : 78, fig. 133 et 134).
