Description
- Length: 81 cm
carved in hardwood of lozenge section, the gently curving front replete with finely engraved traditional designs divided into five sections with small areas bearing traces of pigment infill, most probably carved with a possum jaw engraver; the reverse undecorated with deep cut lug handle, old glossy patina overall
Provenance
Halls Fine Art, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, UK, lot 409
Private collection
Condition
The surface has many small areas of lost patina due to bumps and scuffs over time. The handle at the reverse has what appears to be an old crack that has been repaired by what look to be two small nails. There is an old staple nail in the reverse at the top which has been inserted for use as a hanging system. The shield appears in good order apart from minor natural scuffing and battle scarring to some areas of the edges.
