Catalogue Note

These tables are based on a vide-poche or tricoteuse by Jean-Henri Riesener, reputedly made for Marie-Antoinette to celebrate the birth of her first son, the Dauphin, in 1781.  The original model is now in the Musée du Louvre. The present lot can be dated by virtue of recorded dates of the Sormani addresses. Two similar table vitrines, one signed Henry Dasson dated 1882, were sold at Sotheby's, New York, property from the Collections of Lily & Edmond J. Safra, November 4, 2005, lots 322 and 323 ($33,600 and $34,400).
