amarante and quarter veneer satiné, brèche violette marble top, two long drawers beneath three frieze drawers, branded stamp BETTENFELD A PARIS, to the central frieze drawer.

Catalogue Note

Although a J. Bettenfeld is listed in Ledoux-Lebard as a cabinetmaker, another cabinetmaker of the same name was working for François Linke circa 1910 (see, for example, a dining room suite for a Mr. Baudoin, Index 1579). One of the most extraordinary items seen at auction by this little known but fine quality maker is a mahogany cradle bearing the same signature sold at Christie's, New York, October 28, 2003, lot 45. The present commode in the Transitional style is a copy of one Parisian cabinetmaker Léonard Boudin (1735-1807), reçu maître en 1761. An original model was sold, Sotheby's, London, July 5, 1985.
