bois de violette, burr wood, sycomore bandings and buis stringings, both sides with fruitwood floral marquetry medallions on a bois de rose ground, fleur de pêcher marble top, signed Linke to the right-hand side gilt-bronze border, the vernis Martin panel signed Guilbert, one lock has been removed to reveal the Ct Linke stamp.

Catalogue Note

Linke title: Commode transition genre ancien, bois de violette et bois de rose

This commode was originally made with marquetry medallions in tulipwood and kingwood when the first example was finished in 1909. However, a special order in 1920 for a larger version 113 cm wide by a Mr. Jossfoghi was made with vernis Martin panels painted by Guilbert, who painted a second version for stock in 1923. Another large version was made in 1927 for a Mr. Lerner and one further small version for stock. An undated note states that there were 60 items of 'fonte spéciale' cast for this model and 6 in 'fonte ordinaire,' chased by Dailly who worked on the last versions made in 1926-1927, with a total cost price at just under 6,500 francs each. One sabot has been removed to reveal the FL mark and number 135. According to Linke’s register of bronze mounts, number 135 is a ‘Sabot Louis XV,' in keeping with the present lot.
