This type of corner cabinet or encoignure was very popular during the second half of the 18th century. Either with one or two doors or simply fitted with shelves, they could be decorated with Japanese lacquer, Chinese coromandel lacquer, or with exquisite end-cut marquetry as in the present lot. The present lot with its elaborate mounts and foliate marquetry is very much in keeping with the style of the 18th century cabinetmaker Bernard II Vanrisamburgh.
