acajou and Chinese lacquer panels, marbre de Sarrancolin, each fitted with three cupboard doors veneered to the reverse in zebrano zingana and opening to one shelf, both stamped F. DURAND & FILS twice to the underside of the carcass.

Catalogue Note

Seymour de Ricci, in Louis XVI Furniture, p. 190, illustrates one of the original commodes by B.V.R.B of circa 1765, which had been purchased by the Marquise de Ganay at the Baron Lepic's sale, 1897, lot 44. It might be argued that the Lepic auction in Paris in 1897 was the trigger for this commode. Frédéric Durand, was working with his father, the celebrated Gervais-Maximilien-Eugène Durand at this time, eventually succeeding him in 1920. Another version by Zwiener was possibly made at the same time, assuming the commode had not been seen publicly prior to this date.
