Description

  • inscribed on the reverse of the gold foil medallion  'Mieldner fec. a Gutenbrun 1799'
  • 16cm., 6¼in.
the shouldered cylindrical form with tall slender neck, applied on the front with an oval medallion painted in polychrome panels with the entrance to a mine with two boatmen in the foreground, the hill surmounted by a winged cherub blowing a trumpet, a shield with monogram KHE(?) in his right hand,  inscribed Berggruben on a sign above the pit entrance, cut with a band of polished circles, the shoulder, neck and base cut with a narrow band of serrations

Catalogue Note

From the literature it would appear that this scene is known to appear on beakers signed by and attributed to Mildner. For example, Gustav E. Pazaurek and Eugen von Philippovich, Gläser der Empire- und Biedermeierzeit, p.301 records a beaker of 1788 with a similar medallion and another on p.311, (dated 1782) with a later inscribed date of 1799.
