of oval tub form, the sides pierced with pales and scrolling foliage and chased with swags, engraved with contemporary crest, matching domed cover with couchant cow finial, marked on base rim and cover
Catalogue Note
The crest is that of Upton as borne by the Viscounts Templetown. A similar butter dish by John Lloyd, Dublin, 1773, was sold Sotheby Parke Bernet, 12 November 1975, lot 249. Another by the same maker, also 1773, was advertised in Apollo, November 2005. A similar cow finial tops an example by Joseph Jackson, c. 1780, in the Rowan Collection at the San Antonio Museum.
