Catalogue Note
Although the artist is known primarily as a sculptor, Harry Stinson moved predominantly to sculpture during the 1930s. While at the National Academy of Design in the early 1920s he was a pupil of Robert Aitken, Charles Hawthorne and Ivan Olinsky. The present work reflects the American Impressionist influences that were likely introduced during his studies with Hawthorne and Olinsky. In 1923 Stinson was awarded a Tiffany Foundation Fellowship to study in residence at Laurelton Hall. Interestingly, both Aitken and Hawthorne were art advisors to the foundation during this period.
