Condition

The edges of the board are uneven. The upper right corner is slightly worn. The paint surface is in good condition. There is no sign of retouching under ultra-violet light. Held in the original frame which Nicholson has decorated with a silver aerosol spray. The frame is slightly chipped in the lower left corner.

Catalogue Note

Susie Honnor was a great friend of Winifred Nicholson's who lived in an annexe to the artist's house at the end of her life. Ms Honnor helped Nicholson stage the 1979 exhibition at LYC Museum. Winifred Nicholson gave the present work to Ms Honnor on the opening night of its exhibition at the LYC Museum in Cumberland in 1979 in return for a shawl Ms Honnor spun and knitted.

A new book about Winifred Nicholson's painting is being prepared by Christopher Andreae to be published by Lund Humphries in 2009, endorsed by Winifred Nicholson's Trustees.
