Description

  • The Pleasure Barge (Have a Ride)
  • signed
  • pen and black ink and red crayon, squared for transfer

Provenance

d'Offay Cooper Gallery, whence purchased by Mr and Mrs Milnes-Smith, 22nd September 1969 for £147.

Exhibited

London, d'Offay Cooper Gallery, William Roberts R.A.: Drawings and Watercolours 1915-1968, September 1969, no.10, illustrated.

Condition

The sheet is sound and the paper is very slightly undulating. There is a pinhole along the upper edge, a very small 0.5cm tear to the upper left edge and there are some scattered spots of minor staining in the background otherwise in good overall condition. Held in a simple plaster gilt frame under glass; unexamined out of frame. The paper tones are slightly warmer than the catalogue illustration suggests.
"In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective, qualified opinion. Prospective buyers should also refer to any Important Notices regarding this sale, which are printed in the Sale Catalogue.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF BUSINESS PRINTED IN THE SALE CATALOGUE."

Catalogue Note

Although the 1969 d'Offay Cooper catalogue dated the present drawing to circa 1929 the extreme angularity of the forms would indicate an earlier date, perhaps 1923-25.

To be sold with a copy of the original purchase invoice dated 22 September 1969 and the exhibition catalogue.
