Catalogue Note

Modelled in 1892 following a visit to Rome with his friend and fellow artist Max Klinger, Der Athlet is an idealised self-portrait of Stuck inspired by the Antique, but re-interpreted in a contemporary idiom. It forms a pendant to his Tänzerin, a dancing girl. Stuck exhibited both figures at the Exposition Universelle in 1900. The present cast must pre-date 1905, when Stuck was ennobled: thereafter his bronzes are signed `Franz von Stuck'.
