Overall the condition of the relief is good with some surface dirt and minor wear consistent with age. There are two short vertical hairline fissures in the plaster, which are stable. One is in front of the right figure's forward foot and the other behind the left figure's head.

Stuck was the driving force behind the founding of the Munich Secession at the turn of the twentieth century. He was born in Bavaria and studied in Munich and later taught at its Academy. He taught a number of notable students including Paul Klee and Wasili Kandinsky. Primarily a painter, Stuck did not turn to sculpture until the mid 1890s. His original style is demonstrated in the Serpentinen Tänzerinnen as the lyrical ripples of drapery make reference to Art Nouveau whilst the trance-like state of the dancers and the dark, muted palette reflect Stuck's symbolist sensibilities.
