Condition
The panel is sound. There are some tiny flecks of retouching within the sky and two thin vertical lines of retouching running down the left edge and right edge respectively corresponding to frame abrasions. There is a small dent in the panel in the tree trunk by the seated figure and some light scuffs to the paint surface in the lower left corner, otherwise the work is in good overall condition.

Catalogue Note
The serenity and beautiful colour harmonies of Osbert's crepuscules inspired Georges Rodenbach to write
Il est une heure exquise à l'approche des soirs
Quand le ciel est empli des processions roses
Qui s'en vont effeuillant des âmes et des roses
Et balançant dans l'air des parfums d'encensoirs.
A close acquaintance of Pierre Puvis de Chavannes (Puvis de Chavannes was Osbert's best man in 1894), and friends with Georges Seurat since student days, Osbert's style reflects the calm meditative influence of both artists. Osbert exhibited in all the Rose + Croix exhibitions from 1892 onwards.
