Arabescato marble top, mahogany, quarter-veneer satiné and sycomore bandings, three frieze drawers, the cupboard door opening to one shelf, the pull-out handles with the stamp H to the reverse.

Catalogue Note

The stamp H may possibly the be the one of the bronzier and fondeur Hazard or Haentges frères.

The present model is closely related to one of the commodes executed in 1778 by Jean-Henri Riesener reçu maître en 1768 for the cabinet de retraite of King Louis XVI at the Château de Fontainebleau and later moved to the King's bibliothèque at the Château de Versailles. The original commode acquired in the early 19th century by Alexander Douglas-Hamilton, 10th Duke of Hamilton, then later owned by the Barons Nathaniel and Albert von Rothschild is now in the permanent collection of the Château de Versailles.
