Catalogue Note

The model of the young satyr was created by Clodion possibly as early as the 1770s.  It was a very successful and popular model with numerous replicas having been recorded.  One pair is in the Musée du Louvre, illustrated, D. Alcouffe, A. Dion-Tennenbaum, G. Mabille, Gilt Bronzes in the Louvre, Dijon, 1004, p. 107, no. 48.  Their 18th century origin is not known, but during the First Empire they were installed at the Empress's breakfast room at Compiègne.
