Condition

The painting is unlined and in good overall condition. The canvas has been restretched onto a new stretcher. Ultraviolet light reveals some scattered strokes of inpainting in Oedipus' body and in the hair and flesh of the Sphinx. There is also an area of retouching and a few small spots of inpainting addressing small surface damages in the rock upon which the Sphinx lies. Held in a Stuck-like reproduction frame.
