Purchased by the father-in-law of the present owner prior to 1920; thence by descent

Original canvas with beautifully intact impasto. There is a 15cm long vertical canvas patch to the reverse, which corresponds to an approximately 12 cm long repaired tear in the upper right quarter of the composition, which has been retouched. The repaired tear, its retouching and a handful of small scattered spots of retouching in the upper left quarter of the composition are visible to the naked eye (also visible in the catalogue illustration) but could be rendered invisible by a professional restorer. The canvas is slightly puckered along the lower edge and could benefit from re-stretching to tighten it. There is a small hole towards the centres of the lower and upper edges, and a small tear to the upper part of the right edge. Overall this work is in good condition.
