Catalogue Note
In 1826 Koekkoek established himself in the then rural village of Hilversum where he made many outdoor studies in the surrounding landscape. It was as if Koekkoek needed this impulse from nature, because from that time on he produced oilpaintings regularly. In this period he strived for a naturalistic depiction of his landscapes. Here we see the possible influence of the animal painter Pieter Gerardus van Os, who was part of the artist's colony in Hilversum around that time. It was probably he who inspired the young B.C. Koekkoek to use bright colours to depict his true-to-nature motifs. The openness of the Hilversum landscape on a clear winter's day in the current lot is a beautiful example of Koekkoek's early naturalistic style.
