Catalogue Note
Although Springer's oeuvre is well documented, the present lot remained completely unknown until the present day. Ever since the artist painted the picture in 1843, it has stayed in private hands, where it was discovered only recently. In many ways, this early picture is a great example of the unique skills the artist possessed at a young age.
This lively town view with many figures on a town square can be compared to a similar watercolour, executed in the same year 1843 (see for this W. Laanstra, Cornelis Springer. Geschilderde Steden, Amsterdam 1994, p. 111, no. T43-1).
