Catalogue Note
The present lot was executed during Anton Mauve’s early, romantic period. It clearly betrays the influence of Wouterus Verschuur, the famous animalier who schooled the artist. This painting, which is a wonderful example of Mauve’s early accomplishments, depicts a lively scene of a horse-drawn sledge on the ice. It has been suggested that the driver of the sledge depicts the artist himself. The present lot always stayed in private hands.
