According to Eric M. Zafran, "The Wrath of the Bishop shows the further displeasure of the clergy with the press. The purple-clad bishop, livid with rage, is seated at his desk and crushes under his foot, like some heretical doctrine, a copy of L'Intransigeant, a paper known for its liberal views.  Pen in hand he appears to await divine inspiration to compose his reply to the offensive article" (Cavaliers and Cardinals, p. 132).
