Condition
Chip to back right and back left corner of base. Surface overall weathered. Restoration to ram's right hand side horn. Traces of dirt in places.

Catalogue Note
The influence of Antiquity was fundamental to many of Clesinger's sculptures. The most likely source for the present piece is the relief on an antique sarcophagus in the Louvre in which a semi-nude nymph rides on the back of a sea-goat through waves of water (Louvre, Galerie Denon, inv.no. Ma 342: Musée du Louvre, Catalogue des Sarcophages en Pierre d'Epoques Romaine et Paléochretienne, Paris, 1985, p.153).
